Two Pairs of Pants

Franklin Roosevelt's administration and particularly its New Deal programs were the subject of hundreds of political cartoons, some supportive and others, like the one below, taking a pointed jab at the President and his policies.

To Start You Thinking -

  • 1) Do any necessary research on New Deal farm programs and identify the four individuals portrayed in the cartoon.

    2) What is symbolized by the clothing the merchant is holding? Select one of the items and explain what the "suit" offers US agriculture.

    3) Explain the point of the comment made by FDR.
